one of THOSE conferences…

Got an email from a friend Friday afternoon – “Want to affair-proof your marriage?”

My reply was something to  the effect of “That’s on my list,” as in:

This weekend:
- Clean out the garage
- Burn the leaves
- Affair-proof my marriage
- Take the kids out for breakfast Saturday

You get the idea.

Turns out there was a seminar at a local church, and that was the title.

There is much I want to write here, but I think I can condense the weekend down to a few tidbits that even I can hold on to.

  • I am responsible for setting the tone in my home for communication
  • If I am not meeting the needs of my wife, whether I believe those needs are legitimate or not, I am opening the door for a lot of disappointment and hurt
  • I would also be opening the door for her to find someone else to meet those needs, definitely not something I want to encourage
  • If I don’t want to get to know any divorce lawyers, I need to be vigiliant and protect the boundaries of our relationship

There was much I didn’t care for about the conference. I’m not part of the old-time religion crowd, and I felt like I was watching a taping of the Gospel Jubilee Radio Hour at times. I have a serious problem with a church carving the name of their pastor in stone at the entry to the church. I heard about a dozen too many references to various books and CDs that the pastor wrote/recorded that were available out in the media center (Visa, MasterCard, AmEx all gladly accepted, thank you very much).

But those things were distractions.

As one speaker said, wisdom can be found in some of the strangest places.
