Imagine a grapefruit on steroids, roughly the size of an oversized baby’s head.
Now imagine a fruit that is much like a grapefruit, only naturally presweetened.
And imagine individual bits of pulp about the size of a thumbtack.
That’s a pumelo. At least, that’s the pumelos I grew to love in Guilin, in southern China.
I stopped by a Vietnamese market during lunch today to get a few goodies for Chinese New Year, and they had a close cousin, the pomelo (note the o instead of u in the first syllable). The pumelo is much easier to eat – the skin peels like an orange, while pomelos require a lot (too much to be worth the effort) of work.
But the taste. Might be worth the sticky mess my keyboard will be for the next few days.

Muqtada al-Sadr decided this was a good time to take a vacation.
Good for him. There’s nothing like acting as a puppet for a neighboring country performing one’s clerical duties to add stress to one’s life.
I suggest a week or so at a terrorist training camp spa; it would do him wonders.
There’s nothing like firing RPGs at cardboard humvees resting on the beach of the Caspian Sea to renew one’s spirit.
And a little time with the Revolutionary Council his family probably wouldn’t hurt either.
Can’t wait to see the satellite photos slide show of his trip.
Muqie, wave at the missile’s nose camera camera!
