the blessed

February 18, 2007 · Leave a Comment

We had lunch today at Little Schezuan, a Chinese place near Atlanta’s Chinatown and the Taiwanese Cultural Center.

Mr. Kung, the owner and chef, has always shown a tremendous amount of support for adoptive families, but today was really special.

As I was paying the bill, an Asian family came over to me and my daughter.

She is Asian?

Yes, from Jiangxi province.

Jiangxi! You go to Nanchang?

We made small talk for a minute, then Mr. Kung stepped out from the kitchen, put an arm around my shoulders, and spoke for a moment to the other family in Mandarin.

I have no idea what he said, but his eyes became a little moist, and the other family nodded quite a lot.

When he was done, the mother of the other family said, “She is a lucky girl.

We used to hear that quite often when we first brought her home, but it had been a while.

I responded from the heart, “We’re blessed that she is in our family.”

The woman nodded, then said, “You are all blessed.

I concur.

Gotcha Day
